I did this post for my personal photography blog, but I figured this is an important subject that I hope the Fstoppers community will benefit from. By all means add to this list in the comments below if you have any suggestions! I get this email all the time: "I’m a new/aspiring/struggling/young photographer and I want to know what advice you have for me?"

I literally get this email or tweet or facebook message daily. I suppose that’s what I get for teaching at conferences and offering whatever possibly wisdom that I can share publicly. For a long time, I considered just making a form letter, but then thought that would also be very impersonal…so those emails and messages were placed in a folder awaiting a time I could give my personal input.

So here you are. You’ve chosen one of the most challenging and highly competitive careers in the marketplace today. Are you crazy? Ah, that’s ok if you are because it is also supremely rewarding if you find your own success with it (I wrote an old blog post on my personal take on life as a workoholic photographer). Although, be prepared. It is HARD work. Most photographers statistically make poverty income if you consider the high expense of gear, insurance, and personal marketing.

We point past each other with our words, arguing as though we are looking at the same facts and experiences.

Not all of you will succeed as shooters in the end… and that’s ok because you are going to give it your best and if it's not for you, there are a bunch of other related jobs you can do with your photography knowledge (retouchers, producers, agents, creative directors, photo editors, etc). In the end, the odds are against you, but if you are willing to work, plan, be strategic, and be true to yourself creatively…you may have a fighting chance to really make it! (Source: fstoppers.com)

Less Social Media, More Happiness

Many of us spend hours every day tethered to our devices, pawing at the screen to see if it will deliver a few more likes or emails, monitoring the world and honing our online presence. Yet our reliance on technology to “see” the social world around us can be a heavy burden.

Even so, many would find the prospect of living offline worrisome, or simply impossible. That’s why we undertook a small study with 50 people who may seem nothing less than social outcasts in today’s screen saturated environment. None of our participants used social media or had a mobile phone, and most even refused to email.

We wanted to understand why these people had decided to switch off, and how they managed it. But rather than seeking quick fixes for overuse, we explored the principles and values that drove our participants to live the way they do. Much has already been written about how we can switch off – but that won’t achieve much, unless we really feel the benefits.

Microsoft’s New Surface Headphones

Microsoft had a jam-packed event today, announcing the Surface Studio 2, Surface Laptop 2, and Surface Pro 6. But it had one more major hardware product to reveal: The $349 Surface Headphones. The company is particularly proud of its headphones‘ noise canceling capabilities.

At its most powerful, the headphones can attenuate sound up to 40 dB. Turn the dial all the way around, and they actually provide a slight boost to ambient sound to better hear your environment – say, if you want to listen to music and still be aware of your surroundings.

Another four beam-forming microphones handle your voice during calls – Cortana is on board as well – while a dial on the opposite earcup controls volume. The cups are also touch sensitive for playback control. As for battery, the headphones are rated for 15 hours with Bluetooth and noise cancelling on. There’s a USB-C port for charging and a 3.5mm jack should the battery run out.

Hopefully all these fancy features translate to sound worth their price tag. Microsoft is using 40mm drivers ‘Free Edge’ drivers – relatively rare in the headphone world – but I’m concerned with the lack of any audiophile-oriented Bluetooth codecs. There’s no AptX, AAC, or LDAC, at least one of which I expect standard on $349 headphones. (Source: thenextweb.com)

UX Designers, Stop the Jargon Abuse

“On this screen, we have added a photo gallery. You can clearly see how it is inspired by Don Norman’s first level of visceral design, and how it utilizes some foundational Gestalt principles, helping achieve our graceful degradation strategy for pre-webkit browsers. It’s very gestural, intuitive, designed for millennials.”

One of the problems of using UX jargon in a conversation is assuming everyone in the room will understand what “graceful degradation” means in that context, or that they have read the same Don Norman book you have. If they don’t understand what you are referring to, they will not always interrupt you to ask. Most people feel embarrassed to confess what they don’t know. And this can bring catastrophic consequences for your project.

In many cases, the use of jargon is merely accidental — sometimes terms like “UI” or “parallax” will naturally come up as designers present the work to clients who have no idea what that means. In other cases, it’s a defense mechanism. Using complex words make people sound smart; make them sound like the perfect specialist in that topic. Which then enables them to charge more to solve the problem.

As a new technical term comes out, hundreds of courses, talks, e-books and blog posts start to pop up — claiming to teach you everything you need to know about [buzzword goes here]. You spend tons of money trying to catch up (“early bird tickets for only $999!”). When you finally overcome your impostor syndrome and feel confident enough to repeat that term out loud, the first thing you do is to update your Linkedin profile with that keyword — eventually fueling that same anxiety in other people. For every Nirvana, there were dozens of bands who were just as talented, hard-working and (anti)fashionable. We asked our readers to vote for their unsung heroes on our Facebook page. The answers ranged from piano goddesses to emo pioneers to moody nu-metalers. Here are the ’90s groups who deserve a another listen.

“Live”: The “I Alone” crew were deemed the most criminally underrated band of the ’90s by our readers. Perhaps it was Ed Kowalczyk’s way with imagery in his lyrics. (Remember the heavenly allusions in “Lightning Crashes,” juxtaposing angels with births and deaths, electric and somber?) The Pennsylvanians were pros at following poetic verses with powerful choruses, rocketed by the guitars of Chad Taylor and Patrick Dahlheimer and the drums of Chad Gracey.

Why DIY Tools were Rejected by the Market?

“With the web design service industry a $20.1B market in the US alone, and more than 16M new websites added every month, who creates these millions of new sites? More than 70% of websites are created in a professional process by developers using pro-developers platforms. These B2B solutions offer tools for building advanced websites including custom design and CMS (Content Management Systems), such as WordPress, Joomla and Drupal.”

While 70% of websites are built by developers, agencies, and freelancers, only 3% of websites are built by small-businesses with self-serve DIY tools like Squarespace, Wix, and Weebly. The DIY model has barely putting a dent in the website building market, despite aggressively building out features for over a decade.

Why do businesses still depend on internal teams or service providers, ie agencies and freelancers, to build websites for them? Can’t these feature-rich self-serve platforms provide powerful, easy-to-use tools businesses need to build a site themselves, without needing to depend on “the web guy?” Shouldn’t building a website be as easy as setting up a Facebook page?

Platform companies are product organizations that think in terms of roadmaps and features and sprints.

While some websites are simple and any luddite can quickly build them with existing DIY tools, many business websites are extremely complex and are custom built by internal teams and / or digital agencies for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Or millions. And, many small businesses just don’t want to learn how to use DIY tools, or don’t care to, or have time to. They’d rather focus on their day to day business. US Ranks Near Bottom on Development Commitment

The US ranks near the bottom of an index which ranks 27 of the world's richest countries on their dedication to policies that benefit people living in the poorer nations. The poor performance by the US in the Commitment to Development Index (CDI) was driven by low scores on foreign aid, finance, and environmental policies, according to the annual report released on Tuesday by Washington-based Center for Global Development (CGD).

The CDI, published annually by the CGD, ranks 27 of the world's richest countries on their dedication to policies that benefit people living in poorer nations. Sweden tops this year's CDI, followed by Denmark. Germany climbs to the podium and shares third place with Finland, said the annual report released by the CGD. The US remained in the 23rd spot out of 27 rich countries in the survey, the report said.

The US scored well on security and trade, although new tariffs could drag down the US's ranking in the future. European countries, meanwhile, took the top 12 spots in this year's ranking. "It's clear that European countries are taking the lead on global development, while the US takes a big step back," said Anita Kappeli, a researcher at the Center for Global Development and an author of the study.

According to the report, while the US is the largest aid donor in absolute value, in 2017 it provided just 0.18 percent of its GNI - gross national income -- for development assistance, far below the international commitment of 0.7 percent GNI and below average for the CDI countries.
